Scholarship Opportunities

By Tara Cecil · On November 18, 2016

As one of the predominant deadlines for applications passed, being November 1st, some students applying to college have now had their stressed alleviated. Meanwhile, other students still face impending deadlines and the stress in completing these applications. There are other deadlines and issues that face these students applying to college, however, being the cost of tuition and scholarships. Finding scholarships may be daunting, but it can be easier than it appears.

There are many sources at students disposal in order to find scholarships that they can apply for. Some of these sources can be found online, while another source is Ms. Campbell, La Plata High School’s College and Career Readiness Advisor.

Ms. Campbell is available in the college and career readiness section of the counseling department, where guidance counselors and Ms. Bautista are also readily available. Ms. Campbell can help with not only scholarships, but also with any questions regarding college applications.

Some websites that may be used in order to find scholarships compatible with a students are fastweb.com, chegg.com, cappex.com, and scholarships.com. In most of these websites, students are to create an account and include information like their desired major, extracurricular activities and interests, grade level, etc. Some of these websites, such as fastweb.com, will send the student emails for scholarships that match their account.

There are many different types of scholarships that can be matched to a student’s account. These include raffle-type, essay and writing piece, or transcript and recommendation required scholarships. Raffle-type scholarships work so that the student only gives the organization their name and contact information; different students are then randomly chosen to receive the scholarship. Essay and writing piece scholarships work in a way so that the student provides their name, contact information, and response to a question proposed by the organization. Transcript and recommendation required scholarships generally offer more money than the other two types of scholarships, and in turn ask the student to submit their name, contact information, writing piece, transcript, and possibly a recommendation.

Raffle-type scholarships generally don’t offer much money to students, being only about $1000, and they also do not offer many of these. Essay and writing piece scholarships offer more money than the raffle-type scholarships, but less than the transcript and recommendation required scholarships. Generally, only a couple individuals are chosen to receive the latter scholarship type due to the generous amount being awarded.

There are many upcoming scholarship deadlines for these types of scholarships. One of the writing piece required scholarships is the Regeneron Science Talent Search provided by Society for Science and the Public. It requires participants to write a 20-page report on any of the experiments and conclusions that they have made; the deadline for this application is Wednesday, September 9, 2016. There is also the Niche $2000 “No Essay” College Scholarship, which is a raffle-type of scholarship and can applied for once every month.

As college application deadlines near and eventually pass, students do not need to be worried about completing the applications, acceptance letters, and paying for college. There are many sources available to help students complete scholarships and apply for scholarships and grants.
