It’s no surprise that more people get sick in the winter time. There are many sicknesses out there that are heightened due to the cold air. People have been becoming more prone to colds and cold-like symptoms, such as stuffy noses and sore throats. Sore throats normally come from viral infections and the rest comes from bacteria. In order to decrease your chance of getting a cold, it is said that you must constantly wash your hands and clean any hand held items regularly.
Use disposable tissues instead of paper towels because they are easier on your nose. Sore throats normally happen from changes in temperature, such as going from a warm house to a cold environment. It is smart to gargle salt water when this happens. The salt water will not get rid of your sore throat, but it will help soothe it.
People with asthma have reported that their attacks become more frequent and more dangerous in the winter time because of the cold air blocking their wind pipes. People with asthma should either try to stay inside or wrap a scarf around their nose and mouth; it is also important to keep a rescue inhaler on them at all times. People have also complained of dry skin and hurting joints in the cold winter.
To help with dry skin you must moisturize. It helps to take warm showers instead of hot ones because the heat will dry your skin out. Painful joints have been said to make people more depressed, a common remedy is exercise and a lot of it. Lastly, the big sickness is the flu. There is a huge controversy on whether the flu shot actually does what it is supposed to, prevent the flu. Doctors encourage it but some people refuse. About 74 people across the United States have died to flu related illnesses since last October, one being an infant and two others under the age of 18.
Ages 25-49 are at higher risk to die from this disease, including the 30 people in that age group that have died in North Carolina. It is said that the shot is the best way to fight this and that after two weeks, you will have a full immunity to the virus. There are many risks that can come to you because of the vaccine the risks include: irritability, soreness, muscle aches, hives, fever, nausea, and headaches.
The most serious risk is unlikely, called Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Your entire body practically dies on you; your limbs can’t move on their own and neither can your mouth. It has also been reported that Will Goodson came down with the flu in December and is now still in the ICU and was induced into a coma. Should you stay away from the flu shot or receive it? That’s the big question.
