Starting with the class of 2015, Charles County Public Schools will hold all graduations in Charles County, rather than at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro. Although graduations have been held at The Show Place Arena for quite some time, many parents and teachers in Charles County are excited for the change.
There are three possible venues for the county to choose from: Convocation Center at North Point High School; Blue Crabs Stadium in Waldorf, MD; or St. Charles High School, a new high school due to open August 2014. The Convocation Center can hold up to 4,700 people, while the Blue Crabs Stadium and St. Charles High School can both hold up to 2,000. If the Blue Crabs Stadium is chosen and there is inclement weather on the day of a graduation, it will be held at one of the other choices.
Mrs. Arnold, the principal of La Plata High School, says that she understands why a lot of people want the graduation to be held somewhere else. “The desire is to keep the revenue in the county as well as create easier access for many of our families who can’t travel to Prince George’s county.”
CCPS is also considering holding graduations on weekends. However, Mrs. Arnold admits that although more relatives would be able to attend graduations if they were held on the weekend, many staff would be unable to.
To help make the final decision, Charles County residents are able to vote online at ccboe.com/schools/laplata.php.
