Cell phones are used by more than 203 million people in the United States. As Americans, we use our cell phones to talk with friends, business associates or family. We use it to check the web, play games, take pictures and keep track of our peers and school. Four out of five teens carry a cell phone at all times. They have them while sleeping, shopping and even during school. But is it a good idea for public school children to use cell phones during school hours?
“With kids being so busy nowadays, it has become somewhat of a necessity to have one on them most of the time,” said Tyler Ward, a student at La Plata High School. “I know I definitely use mine a lot. However, there should be no reason why it shouldn’t be out during class. Ultimately, I feel like the school system would benefit from allowing cell phones in school.”
Kids are becoming more independent because of easier access to new phones and electronics, and therefore many La Plata students are frustrated with how the school is handling the rapid increase of technology. Teachers are told to take cell phones if they see or hear them, and some bus drivers dislike students even using them on the bus.
“It’s a good idea for a student to have a cell phone on them if there is an emergency and somebody needs to contact you as soon as possible,” Tyler Plumer said, another student at La Plata. “But a reason why students shouldn’t be able to have a cell phone on them is because students will be too attracted to texting, which in turn will take away learning opportunities. It might distract the student throughout the course of the day.”
There are positives and negatives about letting a student carry a cell phone during school. While some students text or play games during class instead of paying attention, the majority of students want cell phones during school to help with classwork or in case of emergencies.
