Graffiti: unappreciated art or corrupt vandalism?

By Archived Articles · On April 4, 2014

The quality, production, expression or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing or of more than ordinary significance, is the definition of art. Some people believe that art can tell a story of a persons mind. Some people believe art is stupid and it’s not something humans need in their life. There is a type of art in the world called graffiti many people have seen this type of art in the streets of a city or on the side of a building.

Graffiti is a controversial topic all around the world when it comes to art. There is really no right or wrong answer about whether graffiti is illegal or legal because it is a type of art that people do to express themselves and it’s a type of speech. Graffiti has it pros and cons but the pros outlay there cons in the situation most of time. Its understood that the graffiti in the cities can harm the buildings and the atmosphere but it’s a freedom of speech and here in the United States we are aloud to let our feelings out, and if its by art it shouldn’t be a problem in today’s world.

“Imagine a city where graffiti wasn’t illegal, a city where everybody could draw whatever they liked. Where every street was awash with a million colours and little phrases. Where standing at a bus stop was never boring. A city that felt like a party where everyone was invited, not just the estate agents and barons of big business. Imagine a city like that and stop leaning against the wall – it’s wet.” This was said by one of the most famous graffiti artist in the world, Banksy. What if this happened in a city just think about it, it would be vibrant and spectacular. Every corner you turned there would be something different to look at and wonder what the artist was thinking as they drew the picture.

Graffiti should be something that is appreciated in the world. It is something that people can learn from and use their imagination to see outside of the box. It should not be illegal around the world. People should embrace other people’s ideas and be open to change. Art is art and just like the old saying, a picture is worth a thousand words. Some graffiti around the city or town wouldn’t hurt.
