Tattoos and Piercings: Work savvy or not classy?

By Archived Articles · On February 10, 2014

Tattoos and piercings are in fact appropriate in the workplace, but I can understand why other people would think they are not. I personally think they are okay because they really are just accessories on your body. To me, it’s like wearing jewelry or your favorite scarf. To those who think they are inappropriate, it’s mainly because they look “unprofessional,” or some might say it looks dirty.

Body modifications, such as tattoos and piercings, should be accepted as a form of art and expression. They are simply another way for people to express themselves, and that should be respected. Some people think of their body as a canvas and these tattoos or piercings are just the paint. If they are becoming such a big part of today’s world, then why are they still so hard to accept in most places of work?

No one can base their opinion of your intelligence or work ethic on the clothes you wear, or the jewelry you wear, so why do tattoos and piercings have to be such a big deal? I think today’s society, mainly older people who run businesses, need to let go of this belief that people with tattoos and piercings are some punks who don’t care, because most of the time that is not the case.

It seems pretty ridiculous that tattoos and piercings are more acceptable in low key work places, but not acceptable in more prestigious places, like the courtroom, or at the hospital. Why is that? Why do people think tattoos and piercings define you as a person? After all, you are not your job.

Your job is simply a way to take part in the working world, it is not your entire life. Telling someone they can’t have body modifications is basically saying they can’t express themselves, and how they want to look does not matter. Well, it does. People should be allowed to express themselves in any way they think is right for them.
