Walmart vs. Target: Retail Faceoff

By Archived Articles · On January 31, 2014

Two of the three biggest retail chains stores around the round world are Walmart and Target. Shopping is a part of our everyday lives; every person must shop at some point. Both the chain stores have many similarities and differences when it comes to prices, quality, and quantity.

Why do consumers pick one over the other or both of them? Walmart and Target both carry similar items and both companies have their own brand which they sell at a cheaper price than other name brand items. They have a variety of items in from their own brands—such as Great Value and No Boundaries for Walmart, and Market Pantry and Xhilaration for Target, which ranges from food to clothes to household appliances.

Costumers choose the store brand over name brands every day because of value. There are many items that are the same that you can get at both stores. Walmart and Target are right next to each other in some cities. Some are not even a mile away from each other. If it’s not the distance that makes you go to one store than the other, then what is it? Wal-Mart has cheaper prices so you will be sure to find some great deals. They even price match at Wal-Mart. This means if you find something cheaper somewhere else than Wal-Mart, they will even out the difference.

Wal-Mart is open 24 hours a day but is normally cluttered and crowed. Although it is very clean and organized, Target’s deals are more expensive than Wal-Mart’s. “I like to go to Wal-Mart over Target because I can get the fishing and hunting things I need that Target doesn’t sell. Also when I go to buy groceries everything is a lot cheaper at Wal-Mart,” a senior at La Plata High School, Karlie Kilinski, said. Wal-Mart’s Superstores often have a great selection of deli items. Their juices and frozen foods are often very inexpensive. Target has recently added a section where you can buy fresh groceries that are a healthier selection of produce than Wal-Mart.

The frozen food aisle is a bit pricier, though. “I like to shop at target because Target has more open space and the lack of clutter and is cleaner. “I can also get nicer products at Target than at Wal-Mart and it is quicker to shop at target than at Wal-Mart,” John Darbie, a junior at La Plata High School said.

“I would chose Wal-Mart over Target because I can buy my hunting gear there and get gun shells. I can also get cheap things for my truck like clean supplies, a steering wheel, and seat covers,” Dylan Bowling, a senior at La Plata High School, said. Target’s slogan is “Expect More, Pay Less,” compared to Wal-Mart’s slogan “Low Prices.  Every day.  On everything.” it looks like Wal-Mart might be more true to their slogan. Ultimately, both superstores have their place in society. They both serve the same purpose, to different types of shoppers. Its up to you which store you think is better.
