The Great College Fair

By Jacob Jackson · On September 26, 2016

The Charles County College Fair is probably one of the most helpful things for students looking to go to college. With a rough number of 114 different colleges to look around at, it has broad strokes of different majors and desires, with programs such as Programming, Liberal arts, Acting, etc. present.  Also for students whose focus is centered on athletics, there were many DI-D3 schools present. There was also Air Force ROTC, U.S Army Recruiting, and U.S Air Force Academy for those more focused on serving the nation.

There were five major states where most of the colleges came from. There where 19 from Maryland, where students can get In State Tuition. 23 from Virginia, a state that is close enough where you can come home in needed but still far away to get the full experience of being away. Eight colleges from West Virginia almost 5 hours away. There were 25 colleges from Pennsylvania which is 4 hours form home. Finally, there were 12 from North Carolina, which is also about 5 hours from Maryland.

The College fair for La Plata was actually really short, with an estimated time of 35 minutes to spend visiting booths. The short time can be see be seen as a good and bad thing. While it forced students to only go for booths that piqued their career interests, it also hindered them by limiting their time to fully talk to the admissions representatives. Elizabeth Beaton, a senior at La Plata, had this to say: “The College fair was a good experience to help with looking at Colleges and getting in depth with what they have to offer talking to reps ,find out what you need to do to apply so they continue their education .”

College will be an amazing experience.  Even if you already have your top schools in your head, it doesn’t hurt to go and see more. You would be surprised as to what different programs and majors colleges have to offer for you. You may have been on the fence on what you wanted to do after college; talking to the reps at different booths can help finalize your plans and set your future in motion.

When the college fair comes through next year, it would be a great experience for you to go and see everything it has to offer. Make sure you go in with a plan so as to make the most of your limited time there.
