Spirit Week 2016-17 Homecoming

By Matthew Davis · On October 17, 2016

Homecoming is coming up and that means spirit week is too. Spirit week is a time when the student body is allowed crazy and weird days in order to show their school spirit for the upcoming homecoming football game and, ultimately, the homecoming dance. Spirit week this year is as follows:

Monday-Character Day

Tuesday-Mix-Match Day

Wednesday- College Shirt Day

Thursday-Decade Day

Friday-Blue and White day.

Spirit week allows the student body to express themselves. Ultimately, though, like many other things not just in school, but in the community, there are positives and negatives.
One of the aforementioned positives is that it allows students to express themselves in various ways. Also, it gets students more involved in school activities. Additionally, spirit week allows students to participate and have fun outside of the normal school day.
Where there are positives, there are always negatives. Some of the negatives were provided by people who found fault with this upcoming spirit week. One negative pointed out was that spirit week is supposed to be a time for the student body to have relatively unrestricted freedom of expression, yet we are not allowed to do simplistic things to express our school pride including the fact that we can’t wear face paint unless we pay the school to write “LPHS” on our cheeks. Another negative would be that in most schools the normal dress code doesn’t always apply, but here, they still yell at students for the smallest things on Character Day, for example. Lastly, instead of La Plata Pride Day, we call Friday “Blue and White Day”; however, there are others schools out there whose colors are blue and white, such as Leonardtown High School in St. Mary’s and Lackey High School in Charles County. “Blue and White Day” is so cryptic and up to interpretation, but during spirit week, Friday’s theme should only have one meaning: school pride.
All-in-all, spirit week is neither good nor bad: it’s an opportunity to show the pride that you have for your school. Based upon this article, at first glance it may seem like there are more negatives than positives, but that would be untrue because most to all of the positives do not really require an explanation to get people to understand why they are positive attributes of spirit week.
Spirit week should be a time when the school administration is lenient with the rules, but there are understandably some things that they would be concerned with allowing. Some things that I can see them being concerned with would be if someone came to school as a stripper or mass murderer on character day. Again, spirit week is about expressing your school pride, getting involved in the school, and having that sense of unity where for one week out of the year, students can come to school confident and proud, without worrying about getting bullied for their amount of participation or lack there of. As a recap the spirit days are as follows: Monday is character day, where you can come as your favorite character from movie t.v. or video game; Tuesday is mismatched day, where you can come to school in clothes that should never be paired together in one outfit; Wednesday is college tee-shirt day, where you come to school wearing a piece of clothing representing your favorite college; Thursday is decade day, when the different grade levels come dressed in clothes from specific decades posted for their grade level. 9th grade is 60’s, 10th grade is 70’s, 11th grade is 80’s, and 12th grade is 90’s. Last but not least is the most talked about day, Friday, which has already been explained previously in this article.
