Rogue One

By Jacob Jackson · On January 12, 2017

Star Wars is a movie saga that has been around for a little over thirty years with one of biggest fandoms to date. With seven movies and many corresponding cartoons and books, it is one of the most well-known things in today’s generations. Due to this, when a new movie is released, people tend to pay attention.

A basic overview the movie is that a group of very different people, coming from very different back grounds, come together to complete a mission in the hopes of saving the galaxy. The movie takes place during the darkest moments of the war; hope is slowly dying out, and the creation of a new planet killing weapon, the “Death Star,” makes the situation even worse. This group stands up and tries to steal the plans for the Death Star against all odds.

Rogue One is a stand alone movie- very different then any of the other movies that make up the Star Wars movie franchise. In this movie, the timing of the events in the movie occur just a few hours before the beginning of the A New Hope movie. The original Star Wars movies are known for following Luke Skywalker and his friends; meanwhile, the prequels focus on Anakin Skywalker.

However, Rogue One does not mention Skywalker, nor does it “focus on the Jedi and focus on everyone else in the rebellion,” as noted by Elizabeth Beaton. This is said as the other franchise movies have some connection to the Jedi or Force, but this movie does not. Rather, the group is composed of people who can be said to have greater abilities then most. This lack of the Force presence is felt through out the whole movie, contributing to a darker tone. This darker tone is notable as it is darker than any of the other movies, giving Star Wars fans a great surprise. There is only the hope that they could make a difference and help the galaxy.

Despite being different in many ways, Rogue One does follow some of the trends attributed to Star Wars franchise. For example, it follows the trend of having great visual effects as the different worlds are put in great detail. The CGI was simply amazing, having not one but three characters out of only CGI. There was also the fact that some scenes were taken from the originals and still worked perfectly.

This is a must-see movie; if you are a fan of the series or not, you would love it. It has a great story, great effects and relatable characters. If you find down-time and need a movie to see, this would be a great choice.
