Fall Into Autumn In La Plata Maryland

By Madison Lucas · On September 23, 2016

It’s been on the news that there’s been a man, illegally squashing pumpkins around town, but even people who don’t own a pumpkin patch should never let their gourds down! Fall is officially here: that means pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin scented candles, pumpkin pies, basically anything and everything pumpkin. It’s starting to get colder so students break out the sweatshirts for the Friday night football games and throw out the flip flops they let get way too disgusting this summer. Students and teachers are starting to get into the swing of things at school. They have a routine going but, before they know it, it’ll be Thanksgiving break and all of that will go flying out the window. Halloween is soon, so of course they’ll have to start thinking of costume ideas. Soon after Halloween is Thanksgiving so everyone will have to start thinking of workout routines because who doesn’t eat their body weight in turkey and stuffing? All of these things are obvious, but are you aware of all of the exciting events in your community around the fall time?

The Town of La Plata hosts dozens of fall themed events; one of the most popular is the Fall Festival. On October 19th the Town of La Plata will put on an incredible show with live music, a moon bounce (no one is too old for a moon bounce), a petting zoo, craft and food vendors, pedal cars, and voting for the People’s Choice Award for the Festival of Scarecrows. The second annual Rocktober Fest will take place Saturday, October 3rd from 3:00 – 10:00 p.m. at Casey Jones Restaurant and Bar. Families are able to come and enjoy multiple performances in varying genres such as classic and modern rock, blues, country, and pop. The more well-known bands will be on the main stages later in the evening. They feature the Paul Reed Smith Band and the Franklin Square band. Anyone who enjoys a laid back atmosphere with music should attend. The nature-lovers should check out Gilbert Run park; it’s exquisite in the fall. Take a walk along one of the many nature trails, or have a picnic by the water. Fall weather is perfect for a day at the park; it is no longer blazing hot, and frost bite is not an issue yet. Most events for the Town of La Plata take place at Town Hall and welcome people from all ages and even non-residents. Every town of La Plata event is free unless otherwise noted that it will be a charity event. Having a good time this fall does not require breaking the bank. Food is always served and there is something for every age to participate in.

Of course you can’t forget about trick-or-treating! Many of the big neighborhoods in La Plata such as Kings Grant, Agricopia, Clarks Run, Edelen Station, and more are the best for raking in the candy. Almost every house gives out candy and, rumor has it, there are a couple houses in each neighborhood that give out full size candy bars. Dress up as something scary, a tv character, or something creative and go trick-or-treating. No one is too old to go and who in their right mind would turn down free candy?

Life Styles Inc. holds a Samaritan Project Thanksgiving Basket Distribution on Monday, November 21st from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Wills Park. Life Styles is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide affordable, accessible services, activities, and goods to support and encourage individuals, families, and community development. Something like making baskets for the less fortunate really pulls a community together to help others, which is what the holidays are all about.

The Town of La Plata’s website has a calendar of events that are open to the general public. There are events year round and cater to each season and holiday. Pumpkin carving parties are popular in certain neighborhoods, and even decorating for fall and Halloween can turn into a community affair!
