Lately it seems that La Plata has been churning out local royalty. From recipients of 4H awards to Miss Teen Maryland, we’re breeding winners.
Out of the handful of people who are gaining popularity outside of school, though, Savannah Blouin is by far the most enchanting. A junior at La Plata High School, she recently participated in Miss Teen Maryland and received an award for the swimsuit portion of the pageant.
Seemingly a normal teenager, she is quite possibly on her way to winning the title of Miss Maryland. Most may find her in her home watching Sweet Home Alabama and eating Hawaiian pizza, but in her spare time she had the opportunity to not only strut her stuff at a pageant, but to also represent LPHS in a positive light. She is both an ambassador and a role model to the students of La Plata.
She spent about a month preparing for the pageant. “I had to raise a fee of $995, not out of my own spending money, but by going to local stores and businesses and asking if they’d sponsor you. I had to buy three outfits: one for evening wear, opening number, and a bathing suit (including jewelry, shoes, etc.). Then I practiced with a coach for about a day and she taught me how to do the ‘pageant’ walk and pretty much pageant etiquette,” Blouin said. Her mother also helped her prepare, buying her bathing suit from the pageant orientation and showing that good taste runs in the Blouin family.
“I felt honored to even be considered for the award, being amongst other wonderful girls. There were so many different girls there, with different backgrounds and all with a certain uniqueness. I can only imagine what a hard time the judges had trying to choose a winner for any of the categories,” Blouin said, striking down the stigma that only a certain type of girl can be in these types of pageants.
Savannah is an aspiring anesthesiologist and is ready to take on the extra eight years of school she’ll need after she graduates from LPHS, and she is definitely ready for the huge responsibility of putting people to sleep for a living.
The next time you see her in the hallway, remember that you’re not just looking at another teenage girl from La Plata, but a future beauty queen.
