UMD

By Madison Lucas · On February 2, 2017

University of Maryland, College Park is a state university in College Park, Maryland that is well-known for its math, engineering, and physics programs. The university has 27,443 students enrolled in their undergraduate program, making it a large school. They utilize a semester-based academic calendar, meaning that classes last for half of the year, and then a new set of classes is taken for the second half of the year.

If you are interested in applying to the University of Maryland (UMD), talk to your counselor or a mentor to make sure it is the right option for you. You may want to consider what you want your major to be, what your grades currently are, how likely you are to get into your college of choice, and what you can afford. The acceptance rate of the university is 45%, making it a fairly prestigious school. The average SAT score of students who are accepted into UMD is 1260-1420. Meanwhile, the range for ACT scores of applicants is 29-33, and the average grade point average is 4.21.

Living in Charles County means that students at La Plata High School are eligible to pay in-state tuition at any Maryland state university, which is much cheaper than going somewhere out-of-state. As of 2016, the cost of tuition at UMD is $8,152; whereas, for someone who lives out of the state of Maryland, tuition is $29,300. This is still fairly cheap. Making financially smart choices while in high school can set you up for success in the long run. Living in debt can become very stressful, so choosing a college that will not put you into a great deal of debt is important. “Paying off a huge student loan is like eating an elephant. It’s going to take a long time, and after a while you’re going to get sick of it.”

Testudo the terrapin has been the mascot of the University of Maryland since 1932. The name Testudo originates from a Latin word meaning protective shelter for Roman soldiers heads. There are several superstitions involving statues of the tortoise Testudo, one of which includes leaving him offerings during finals week. Students leave things for Testudo such as empty coffee cups they drank while studying for finals in hopes of receiving a good grade on finals in return.

There are a plethora of out of classroom experiences at the university. UMD is a division one school in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and all sports games are free for students. Sports games are a great way to meet and interact with new people, while being supportive of your school.

As a commuter school, freshman do not have to live on campus and are able to travel to and from school. Located between Washington D.C. and Baltimore, UMD offers students easy reach of big-city experiences. Internships are available to students in both of the surrounding cities increasing the benefits of your education.

The University of Maryland has a total enrollment of 27,443 and the student to teacher ratio is 16:1. 45.6% of classes have less than 20 students in a class; 37.5% classes have 20-49 students, and 16.9% have 50 or more. Attending a larger school has both positives and negatives as you are able to meet new people from all over the country and make life-long friendships.

Choosing a college can take a while, and it should. Make sure you consider all of your options and chose the college that best suits you.
