Actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his apartment in Manhattan on Feb. 2. He was 46 years old and the cause of death has yet to be determined. The only confirmation that the law enforcements have made was that he did in fact die in his home. He was found by a friend at 11:30 am and it was reported that he was on the bathroom floor. The friend told the public that he could not reach Hoffman; he became concerned and went by the house. The friend who found him was David Katz, a screenwriter that Hoffman worked with. It was also confirmed that Katz found Hoffman alone.
A law officer told the media that a syringe was found in Hoffman’s arm and an envelope that appeared to be filled with heroin was nearby. The official confirmed that “It’s pretty apparent that it was an overdose.” Hoffman had a history with drugs. In May of 2013, he went through detox treatment for substance abuse, including heroin. He was also a drug abuser in his early 20’s. He told CBS that “it was anything I could get my hands on. I liked it.” After detox, he was clean for 23 years before relapsing.
Three cell phones were found in the building, that contained Hoffman’s number. Police were able to make four drug arrests. It is unclear if any of them connect, but one phone belonged to Robert Vineberg, who is an alleged heroin peddler. Vineberg’s stepdaughter also confirmed that the two men had known each other for several months. The stepdaughter said that Vineberg was very upset and that “he hadn’t seen Hoffman since November” and he said “I wish he would have called me because I could have made sure he was OK.” The Stepdaughter said, “My dad thought very highly of him,” and when asked if her dad sold heroin to Hoffman, she said, “That’s my dad. He got into this right now because he couldn’t find any work.” Vineberg faces 25 years, if convicted. The police have set up a very active investigation to find out who sold the heroin to Hoffman. Juliana Luchkiw, who was found in Hoffman’s heroin probe, was just arrested for possession of marijuana and cocaine.
Most people recognize Hoffman for his films like “The Master,” “Doubt,” “Charlie Wilson’s War,” and his Oscar winning, “Capote.” He appeared in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and was scheduled to appear in Mockingjay- part 1, which is now in post-production. He was married to Mimi O’Donnell and had three young children. He will be missed by many.
