Common school funding stereotype unfounded

By Archived Articles · On November 15, 2013

It is often believed that sports programs receive an adequate amount of money from the school’s finance committee, and other departments, like the arts, are often overlooked and not given enough money to fund even the simplest supplies.

The athletic director at La Plata High School, Mr. Nagle, stated that the sports programs are funded the amount of money that is necessary for all the materials that are required for each sports group. The field hockey team was in need of a new playing field, so the sports funding allowed a new field to be built.

“Every year the art teachers develop and approve a budget, which is then forwarded to the school’s finance committee for review. The art teachers always submit a budget for necessary and basic supplies that will be consumed by students in creating the projects mandated by their class curriculum during the course of that school year. This year the art department order was fully funded by the finance committee,” Mr. Troy, head of the art department at La Plata High School, said.

The sports program and the art department both receive the necessary amount of money to keep the programs running. Although many people have the impression that the sports program receives more funding than the arts, both ask for a budget that is met by the finance committee.

Both the sports program and the art department feel that La Plata High School’s administration and finance committee are very understanding toward what is needed for each budget. They also said that they are blessed to have such a generous understanding for what is needed for each program.
