School needs more opportunity for fundraisers

By Archived Articles · On April 16, 2015

Fundraisers are held throughout La Plata in order to raise money for various clubs and sports. Due to the lack of advertisement allowed in the school hallways, most of these events are unknown to the students and faculty of La Plata High School. If the clubs and sports were given the opportunity to put up advertisements such as posters, efforts to conduct a fundraiser would be reduced while more money will be raised.

There are several fundraisers held around the school, most successful being ones that are unique and able to draw the attention from various groups of people.  Though they “like to reach out to small and medium sized groups and businesses,” according to SGA President Justin Ryan, fundraisers and charities such as Baby Onesies is just one of the successful things they do in La Plata. Though SGA is one of the more advertised clubs that does fundraising, other clubs and sports have them and do not receive the same amount of recognition. Recently, basketball had a white t-shirt fundraiser for their first Varsity home game for the tradition of a “white out” game while most sport teams participate in the mulch sale during the spring. Other clubs such as Best Buddies and Key Club are known to have their own fundraisers to pay for their expenses.

Most fundraisers are announced to the school during the morning announcements, but due to the socialization during that time, fundraisers are often unknown to the students of La Plata unless they are associated with the group, and when the students are not associated, some may go days or weeks without having any knowledge of certain fundraisers until it’s too late. With all of the effort that is required to initiate a fundraiser, a school that is unaware of its own fundraising will often lead to discouraged club members who will then create a chain reaction of less money raised. “We have to make sure that everyone has a purpose and all have the same idea,” said SGA officer, Ms.Chavara.

Since even some officers have little to no knowledge of the fundraisers going on, an easy, common solution would be to allow flyers and more advertisement. If a class is too noisy during the announcements, how will the students figure out any major events in our school other than the daily gossip? “It is very difficult because it is word of mouth,” Ashley Deaton, an 11th grade SGA member said in reference to how gossip tends to be the main reason for fundraisers  to grow in school. For those in a noisy classroom, all they can do is hope for the gossip-mill to find out any event going on, so this simple solution can pose great advantages in conducting and receiving information on fundraising and other events.
