Gauntlet on the Beat: Sara Jarosz

By Archived Articles · On April 29, 2014

Born: May 23, 1991
Origin: Austin, Texas
Genre: Bluegrass, Folk, Americana
Instruments: Vocals, mandolin, banjo, guitar, octave mandolin

As a young artist, Sarah Jarosz has already made her mark on the music industry. At 22, she has released three albums, one of which reached number one on the Bluegrass/Americana charts. Her newest single is “Over the Edge,” off her album “Build Me Up From Bones,” and it is gaining much attention from the Spotify community.

Though she is categorized as a country artist, Jarosz’s music could easily crossover into Pop charts. She brings a fresh face to country, which is known mostly for its twangy, backwater sound, and makes it appeal to a younger audience. Her music can be compared to that of other neo-country stars, such as Mumford & Sons, Alison Krauss and Passenger.

Jarosz started playing the mandolin at 10, later learning the guitar and banjo. She released her first album in her senior year of high school, and went on to graduate from the New England Conservatory of Music in 2013. She is, to say the least, a prodigy.

Her first album, “Song Up In Her Head,” featured songs “Edge of a Dream,” “Tell Me True,” “Can’t Hide,” the eponymous “Song Up In Her Head,” which reached the top of the Bluegrass/Americana charts, and “Mansinneedof,” which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental Recording. At its release, the album was called “an impressive coming-out party” and writers said that Jarosz “imbues virtuoso musicianship with an adventurous spirit.”

Her newest album, “Build Me Up From Bones,” features songs “Over the Edge”, “Simple Twist of Fate”, and — my personal favorite — “The Book of Right On.” Critics have praised this album, as it has a more developed sound than her earlier efforts and shows how her talent and artistry has grown during college.

“The lavishly talented singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist shimmers and haunts on this acoustic jewel,” says USA Today. “Jarosz’s acoustic vibe is equally at home in a hip West Coast coffee shop, a bluegrass festival, or a suit-and-tie concert hall,” notes Christian Science Monitor.

All in all, Sarah Jarosz is a wonderfully talented new country artist that, I hope, is going to be around for years to come.
