The stands in North Point High School’s gymnasium were quickly filling up near 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30. The freshman and junior varsity teams finished their routines around 7 p.m. with Westlake being the first to go; fans were impressed with their unique tumbling and high energy. They had loud cheers and none of their builds fell.
McDonough was up next, and although in the past they’ve always just fallen short of making it to regionals, fans were excited to see what they had to offer this year. They started their routine off with quick builds and very advanced tumbling. The McDonough cheerleaders really had the crowd pumped with their fast-paced routine and precise dance moves.
Following them was Lackey, the first team with one male. The crowd applauded them on their high basket tosses and abundance of tumbling. They finished strong with all the girls hitting the mat and the male standing in the back with his arms crossed.
Then it was North Point’s turn to go, and the crowd got louder than ever. This was the only other team with one male. The NP cheer squad got their fans to their feet with their tight stunts and precise builds in the air. They kept everybody’s attention with their fast- paced routine and unexpected tricks.
La Plata was second to last to go, and before coming to the mat the girls did a team cheer. The fans were impressed with almost the whole squad starting off the routine with tumbling. They perfected their builds and kept high energy with their dance moves.
Finishing off the competition was Thomas Stone. Their high builds were noticed by the fans along with their precise dancing. The girls ended their routine by hitting the mat.
All the squads gathered on the mat as awards were about to start. Music kept the squads and fans pumped and excited. La Plata’s JV took second place, while North Point’s JV took first.
Everyone was quiet as they finally announced who got second place: McDonough High School. Fans jumped to their feet, shocked but filled with excitement as McDonough has never made it to regionals. North Point got first place and the fans remained standing as they cheered them on.
All the squads had great sportsmanship as they congratulated the top two teams. All the squads gave their best performances and everyone could tell they worked hard and put on a great competition for the fans.
