Entering our second year of PRIDE Time at La Plata High School, students have an ample amount of choices as to where they spend their lunch time. PRIDE Time is La Plata High School’s hour long lunch program. Here at La Plata, students are provided two thirty-minute lunch shifts during which they are able to eat lunch, attend club meetings, get extra tutoring help, and socialize with friends they may not have classes with.
PRIDE Time is full of opportunities so take advantage of them! Having an hour of lunch provides access to resources that students can use to be more successful . The same students that try to eat lunch in the cafeteria for both shifts are the ones who complain about not having enough time at home for homework. The library is open every day and it is a nice, quiet place to do homework or study for a test you may have later that day. Teachers have their rooms open and are willing to help. PRIDE Time was specifically designed for the students of La Plata High School to succeed, so we should make sure we are taking advantage of it.
Students’ fourth period teachers should have given out a list of all the clubs the school provides along with the tutoring schedules for the all of the teachers in the school. If any student should find that he or she does not have anywhere to go for lunch, one vice principal advocates experimenting. Mr. Larson suggests, “You can change and choose all year. Get to know what you like.” Take advantage of the opportunities provided for you and be a part of SGA (Student Government Association), Best Buddies, Newspaper, Yearbook, or Math Team! Having clubs at lunch instead of after school is probably the most convenient aspect of PRIDE Time. Students who could not previously participate in clubs because they could not get a ride home are now able to be in the clubs they want. Students should ask a friend or teacher who knows them well to suggest clubs based on interests. The possibilities are endless, and there is bound to be at least one club to interest each student. It is important to be involved in school; colleges look for participation in extra curricular activities and clubs are an excellent way to get involved. So try some things out, who knows? You may end up loving it!
