It is 2016 and time for a new president in America. Donald Trump v.s. Hillary Clinton. It has been a long and brutal war of words between the two candidates up to this point.
Throughout Donald Trump’s campaign, he has made statements about reforming the immigration policies and strengthening the border between the U.S. and Mexico. According to the American Action Forum, “The question of how to address unauthorized immigration has been among the most prominent issues in the 2016 presidential race. Presidential candidate Donald Trump has proposed that the government fully enforce current law and remove all 11.3 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the country.” Enforcing the current law would take at least 20 years and cost the U.S. government $400-$600 billion. Trump’s plan would be to do this in just two years which would be very expensive and virtually impossible due to the amount of resources it would take.
Trump’s plan on tackling illegal immigration since the start of his campaign has not just been to remove all undocumented immigrants, but to also build a high security wall across the expanse of the U.S. Mexican border. This wall would not just take many years to build, it would consume hundreds of tons of valuable resources and cost billions of dollars to construct. “I would build a great wall, and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I’ll build them very inexpensively,” Trump said, announcing his candidacy on June 16, 2015. “I will build a great, great wall on our southern border. And I will have Mexico pay for that wall.” Politifacts.com
Many people oppose Donald Trump due to what they consider his misogynistic bigotry, but there are those who oppose Hillary Clinton, too.
Hillary Clinton’s campaign has shone a light on many social issues since she declared her candidacy on April 12, 2015. “Clinton has generally taken a liberal position on social issues, supporting abortion rights, marriage equality, and the reclassification of marijuana from a Schedule I to Schedule II drug. She also supports immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship and President Obama’s executive orders on the DACA and DAPA programs. Clinton has called for repealing gun industry liability protections, implementing comprehensive background checks, and closing the Charleston loophole. She has diverted from the Democratic Party platform on capital punishment by supporting it in federal jurisdictions “for very limited purposes.”” Ballotpedia.org.
Many have opposed Hillary, claiming that she is a liar and a crook. “The New York Times on March 2, 2015, reported that Clinton “exclusively used a personal email account to conduct government business as secretary of state.” The emails were stored on a private server at her New York home. At the State Department’s request, Clinton turned over 30,490 work-related emails totaling roughly 55,000 pages, and deleted 31,830 emails she deemed personal. Clinton’s defense of her unusual email arrangements resulted in numerous false and misleading claims.” USAtoday.com.
So far both presidential candidates have made claims, mistakes, and false accusations in this war of words. Some say that, because there is evidence supporting Trump and Hillary being friends during Bill Clinton’s presidency, Trump’s campaign is just a joke that has gone on for far too long. It seems, however, that we will just have to wait until November to learn the punchline.
