This school year has brought around change, and one of these changes concerns the bell schedule. In the past, students have had five minutes to get from class to class. During this transition period, the faculty noticed more socializing and communicating than going to class on time and doing the right thing. So, to ensure that students don’t socialize, they now have four minutes to get to class. Though it does make some of us dash to get there, some students still decide to hang out with their friends, causing them to be tardy. Personally, I believe that five minutes is ideal because I still have to go to my locker in between classes to get binders and other materials since my backpack has little space. Once I do that, I try to race to my next class and end up being late anyways. Students communicating with friends once in a while can improve moods after a stressful period, after a test or presenting a presentation before going to the nest class. I also had the chance to speak to two students who and compare how the change affected them. When asked, Shaneya Allen said, “I feel like we have to literally rush to class so our teachers wouldn’t make us tardy or anything. Because in almost every class I have certain people late because of the four minutes time scale.” The other student I had the chance to speak to wanted to remain anonymous. The other student said, “I don’t like it because for some people they have to get to one class upstairs in the back, then go to a another class out in the trailers all the way across the school. Also there are a lot of people, and it’s hard to get to a class when there is so many people in one small area.”
Though it’s just one minute of our time gone, those sixty seconds are all we need to get situated, focused and ready to learn!
